Languages of different intimacies. "A kiss doesn't kill" by Ani Nowak at the Museum of Modern Art

In the case of Polish queer art, it often seemed to me that well-intentioned artistic or curatorial endeavors aimed to explain non-normativity to a normative, affluent audience.

A kiss doesn't kill. Ania Nowak and guests

exhibition teaser and making of performance rehearsals

A kiss doesn't kill. Ania Nowak and guests is a choreographic exhibition consisting of the artist's performances, performed both by herself and those she invites, as well as works by almost twenty artists created in various techniques: photography, video, sound art, painting, sculpture. The exhibition also includes non-art objects whose history, context of creation and ancient meaning expand the world to which Ania Nowak invites the audience. In her works, the choreographer consistently uses language, and sometimes its prosthetics (such as repetitions, loops, three- or four-word clusters) to check new possibilities of saying things for which we do not yet have the appropriate words. She is interested in expanding the field of meanings and actively launching new, emancipatory narratives. Her work is an exercise in non-binary thinking and speaking, as a result of which the divisions - into object and performance, copy and original, individualism and collectivism, pain and pleasure - are blurred, which provides new opportunities for understanding.

PROJECTS AND ETUDES

MY NAME IS IG ENGEL

I was born in 2005, I live in Warsaw. I graduated from the Piotr Lenar AMA Film Academy in Warsaw, majoring in camera acting.

At Chubbuck Studio in Warsaw, Marcin Zarzeczny's school, I completed a 100-hour workshop on acting skills using Ivana Chubbuck's technique, based on the Stanisławski method. It is deeply immersed in psychology and behaviorism, but it does not focus solely on emotional expression, but emphasizes the importance of proactivity in striving to win the goal set in the scene.

From July to September 2023, I had the honor to co-create, as a performer, an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw entitled: "A kiss does not kill. Ania Nowak and guests." The artist is a Polish choreographer and lyricist who works at the intersection of performing and visual arts, feminism and the queer community. Every weekend I performed her performance "Untitled" at MSN.

In September 2024, I appeared on the cover of the new album by Katarzyna Nosowska and Błażej Król entitled "You can". In 2023, I was an extra in a film by Małgorzata Szumowska and Michał Englert entitled "Woman with...". In 2022, I played the main role in the music video of the German band Bazooka Zirkus "F_uck NSBM". I also appeared in the music video of Yung Adisz entitled: "WWA na kxksie". I also took part in etudes and photo sessions at the AMA Film Academy.

I am interested in modernist, postmodern, experimental, feminist and queer art of the 20th and 21st centuries, including visual culture and performing arts. At the Academic Secondary School at the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology, I studied the cultural studies of Japan and the Far East. I am starting my studies at the Faculty of Cultural Studies, specializing in contemporary culture at the Faculty of Humanities at SWPS University.

I am a young actor and performer at the beginning of my professional path. As a non-binary person, I find myself in roles that reflect the experiences of each gender. I speak English, German and Japanese. I invite you to familiarize yourself with the visual content posted on this website.
